Post-Laminectomy Syndrome

Post-laminectomy syndrome encompasses a condition where pain and functional limitations persist subsequent to undergoing a laminectomy—a specific form of spinal surgery. During this surgical procedure, a portion of the bone layer that covers the rear of the spinal cord (known as the lamina) is removed to alleviate pressure on the spinal nerves. Often performed in conjunction with other back surgeries like discectomy, laminectomy is primarily sought to relieve spinal stenosis, a constriction of the spinal column. The emergence of post-laminectomy syndrome arises as a complication from this surgical intervention. It falls within the realm of failed back surgeries, a broader category inclusive of chronic pain resulting from various spinal procedures, including spinal fusion.

Underlying Causes of Post-Laminectomy Syndrome

This condition is distinguished by persistent back pain that might radiate in a radicular manner—extending to the neck, arms, or legs—depending on the location of the surgical intervention. This lingering pain can stem from diverse origins, such as:

Formation of excessive scar tissue
Recurrent disc herniation
Presence of residual bone fragments at the operative site
Repetition of stenosis
Development of bone spurs
